08/05/2026 – Dev Update # 001
Cards on the table… I’ve been working on this project in the background, but life gets in the way sometimes and it’s hard to update on here whilst constantly juggling. I wanted to launch the Madonna piece just before Christmas as a beta release and get you to test it like an early access, but my merch supplier let me down and it was better to take a step back and regroup. I’ve spent too much time on this to rush. I’m going to start using this page as a development diary to update on the release, patch notes, and generally try to approach this in a more organised way moving forward, and it would be cool to document the process.
With that said I’m now very close to having version 1.0 of a Void One augmented reality app available on Google Play. There will of course still be bugs to work out, but I’m confident I have a solid foundation to build on, and I need the app to go live so I can use it over the summer to start road testing new ideas. I will be coming for Apple Store, but it’s a whole other process to contemplate.

Some History…
After having my work taken down from Instagram and Facebook in January 2025 because META were removing all third party use of their software, Spark AR, I lost a lot of the progress I’d made with augmented reality, early innovations seemingly impossible to reproduce. A whole industry binned. At first I planned to see how that community migrated, and what the next big thing would be, what software people would adapt to, but it became apparent that I needed something of my own. I have a little background in coding and I’m really good at learning systems, so I figured I’d do it myself, again.

I’ve had problems with censorship in the past, having my work blocked immediately after launching with no way of knowing whether it would pass the vibe check or not up front and no way of appealing decisions, potentially ruining an entire project without warning. The nature of my work means that will continue to be an issue, and I can’t build on that. It’s the same as having a presence with this website, I’ve never wanted to rely on social media for my portfolio, especially knowing they could take it all away at a moments notice, and that’s it. Gone.
Unity felt like the only option, it’s a gaming engine but it also supports mobile and AR, which opened up a whole world of other possibilities. With META, or any platform tbh, there was always a bandwidth to work within, 2mb per effect or something ridiculous, and you could only have one effect open at a time. It was incredibly restrictive. That’s all now a thing of the past, everything is HD, and I’m confident I have a system robust enough to launch and continue to work on, it will never be perfect, there’s too many compromises that have to be made. Lighting, material reflectivity, stability, tracking, user device. It’s a minefield, fix one thing and it breaks another. There’s a balance that needs to be found and that will continue to be an ongoing process leading up to the release of Can Control, with some test footage below.

It’s been one of the most challenging things I’ve ever attempted to teach myself or undertake, a brutal learning curve, but within basically 6 months I had a prototype, and I’m starting to feel confident I can deliver on what was a Herculean task from the outset for a solo developer. I love how it’s evolved, but if you’d said I needed to do all this work at the beginning it would have been massively daunting.

The Future_
I’m expecting to go live mid June 2026, but these things are ever changing, so expect updates here. I’ve produced a bunch of stickers and a few prints for the launch. You’ll get a little pack basically. I don’t want to add too much at this stage as I refine how everything works and get the foundations right, but it will be a nice little taster of what’s to come. I’ve rebuilt the Terminal Decline piece as a legacy thing for those that invested in what I believe to be the worlds first sound reactive hoodie back in 2024. That’s all now fully functional again, but there’s a few extras. I’ve added some animation & there’s two versions now. One that reacts to music I made, and one that reacts live to sound in the environment. I rebuilt the first AR sticker from back in 2022. It felt like starting again with the basics whilst learning Unity and working with old resources helped me navigate the software more quickly, and it means all the old stickers I gave out will now be operational again too. The Madonna With Missile piece is something new to keep things fresh, and is the first piece where I didn’t have to worry about censorship. I’m slowly developing my own system of controls, adding 3D models and more functionality. This is very much just an introduction.
I’m getting together some new footage of the app for a promo reel, so hold tight for more news.
